A trip to the dentist

Back, when I was a child, I dreaded going to the dentist. I ended up having every one of my baby teeth pulled, they just wouldn't come out. Even today I have a difficult time going to the dentist.
Took Andy to the dentist today to get a filling done. They didn't even have to give him a shot, they do it so differently now. Today's x-rays show that his 12 year molars are about to come through. He's only 9 years old. He's so advanced for his age. Now he doesn't have to go back until August and that's for a cleaning.

The Big 3

Three and half years ago I helped take a rather large pig to the auction. This pig brought only $5 and the owner had to pay the auction. Since I had the horse trailer there...and three horses were for sale...
The owner of the horses was being deployed overseas and his wife didn't want to take care of five horses so they sold three. One was a 6 month old filly, the auctioneer said it was a colt and I couldn't tell from where I was sitting, otherwise I'd have bought that one. There was a beautiful paint that came through first, but she was too skittish to have around my boys.
The last horse was a gruella mare. They said she was three years old. I bought Gypsy home. The sellers told me that they had bought her six months earlier.
A month after I bought Gypsy, there was a big grass fire to the west of us. The wind came shifting and the smoke was blowing over our farm. Some people in the area came to help us load up the animals. One of the men, long-time horseman, was looking at Gypsy and asked when she was due to deliver. I hadn't given any thought to her being pregnant. The fire was contained and we didn't have to evacuate but it was nice to be prepared and have neighbors who will help. That was the closest we've come to a fire.
I called the auction house and they contacted the sellers of Gypsy who said that no, she wasn't pregnant. So life goes on. BFF Magie keeps saying that Gypsy was pregnant and would have the foal by Christmas. Christmas came and went, no baby. January, February and most of March came and went...no baby. So I'm thinking, nope no baby. The vet was even out to geld Comet and he couldn't decide either. Three years ago today, Peter is outside smoking, (He's quit for a year now) comes in and asks what that thing is out in the pasture.
Sure enough, there's a little baby out with Gypsy. Since Alex had claimed Comet for his horse, Andy was the proud owner of Sophie. She's named after Colonel Potter's mare on MASH. Anyway, Sophie is three years old. We think dad might have been a donkey. Sophie inherited mom's stripe down her back and the white back hoof. She's really a sweetheart. That's her to the right.

Viewers

I was looking at the stats on this blog and it said that I had readers from France and Russia. I took a year of French in college but that was many, many years ago. My great-great grandfather came to the United States from Russia back in the 1870's.
And since my camera is working (happy dance) another picture. Mostly for my parents. This is Andy working on a science project that he got for his birthday this month.

Jumprope for Heart

The week before last, our school had the Jumprope for Heart. My Alex, pictured above in the blue shirt, won first place in the 2nd grade for jumproping backwards. Andy didn't do as well, he's not yet found his athleticism. Alex has been running since he was born, it seems like. I don't think he starting walking, he started running. Both boys did very well on their report cards.
And then came Spring Break. We didn't do much, it was so windy and every day there have been reports of fires. The boys go back to school tomorrow. Happy dance.
Went to the auction today. Sold five chickens, bought two muscovy ducks and 10 baby ducks, variety specials. Alex has his picked out. Did I mention that school resumes tomorrow? And my camera is working...

Number 79

This is posting number 79. It will be the last post for awhile, other issues are taking priority right now. I will continue to read the blogs I have as favorites.
Oh, and the little dog we were going to adopt...her owners finally showed up and took her home.

Smelling the country

Monday I took a goat and five ducks to the auction in the back of my Jeep Cherokee. I keep a plastic tray under the duck cage but sometimes they squirt. The goat, it wasn't mine, left some little presents. Suffice it to say the Jeep doesn't smell exactly fresh. So this morning I went to the feed store, stopped by the little grocery store and got some powdery air freshner and country pork ribs for supper tonight. Then went to the feed store. At the mill picking up my order, you could smell IT. The sheriff's department had just been there and disposed of a Skunk. I didn't really notice it until I got home and was emptying the hen scratch into the storage bins but the skunk smell was on the bags. Bff Magie uses the feed bags under her poultry cages. I don't think I'll be taking these bags to her.
Today is school volunteer day. Tonight we are having the ribs. My grandma used to boil them for hours with bay leaves, peppercorns and potatoes. I'm going to use the crock pot.

Come on Saturday

So this Saturday, if all goes well, this little lady will be coming home with us

PetHarborPet

We've (meaning me) have decided to name her Ruby, after Barbara Stanwyck's real name, Ruby Stevens. We used to have a Keeshond named Katie after Katherine Hepburn.
Ruby has been at the shelter for two days, way to long for a little dog to stay there without her people coming to get her. There are a number of dogs needing homes. Older dogs who need a last home, a few younger dogs who can spend a long time with you. A large number of pit bulls. Labrador Retrievers are in abundance. My dad had one, Duke, when I was a kid. He was named after John Wayne. I can never volunteer at the Humane Society. I'd be bringing so many animals home. There is also a red slider turtle for adoption. And a black and white rabbit.
I think that Ruby will make a nice younger sister for Eliza (see picture of Eliza to the right).
And I bought a new camera today so hopefully I'll be able to add pictures to the blog now.
